A New York Graphic Novel
Work in progress
35-40 Panoramic street drawings link a walk from 5th Avenue & 110 Street in Harlem down to the Statue of Liberty just offshore from the most southerly tip of Manhattan. Set as a dark comedy following a lost sole strolling through the city.
A great deal of time was spent gaining access to buildings & searching for areas to shoot. I would find a spot a click off 50-200 images. The drawings take about a month, from mapping out to finishing final draft.
Works below show the view over Central Park from the 18th floor of an apartment on 5th Avenue & 110th Street, also included are three detailed scans. The Guggenheim Museum & finally an energetic view looking down East Broadway from Manhattan Bridge in Chinatown, alongside three detailed scans.
Tate to Tate: A Walk along London's South Bank
A concertina book showing a group of people walking east along the South Bank. Brightly coloured drawnings show a diverse group, of all races & ages, & as you follow their progress from spread to spread you start to notice cunning details & the beginning of a story. Behind them, in the foreground, are Lambeth, Hungerford, Blackfriars & Southwark Bridges, the London Eye & across the Thames a magnificent panorama of the buildings on the North Bank: Tate Britain, the Palace of Westminster, the Savoy Hotel, & Somerset House. Then, arriving at Tate Modern, & the climaxes of the stories you have been following, you see that another group of characters is walking west, each with another overlapping story to follow.
Produced in 2008 & taking over a year & a half to put together the one long illustration that stretches over 68 pages. All of the elements were drawn separately before colour & design were introduced on the mac.
The exhibition, held in a gallery near London Bridge, held a 30ft print of the book encasing the perimeter of the entire room. With limited edition hand-bound copies for sale, original sketches & original works. Good press followed as copies of the paperback published by Jonathan Cape entered stores nationwide.
'A book like no other.'
'A stunning graphic book.'
'A cornucopia of colour.'
'Three of the Best.'
'Great inspiration for a break in London.'
Image carousel of the entire walk coming soon.
